Place your mind before the mirror of eternity! -
By Clare of Assisi, (1193? - 1254)
English version by Regis J. Armstrong, OFM CAP & Ignatius C. Brady, OFM
Place your mind before the mirror of eternity!
Place your soul in the brilliance of glory!
Place your heart in the figure of the divine substance!
And transform your whole being into the image of the Godhead Itself
through contemplation!
So that you too may feel what His friends feel
as they taste the hidden sweetness
which God Himself has reserved
from the beginning
for those who love Him.

Dawn is a Friend By Francis Brabazon, (1907 - 1984)
Dawn is a friend who comes to rouse the lover from grief,
And enemy, for from his pain he wants no relief.
Without separation's pain how can he be aware
Of the Beloved's presence in the perfumed air?
The deep night breathes quietly as a woman sleeping;
In the silence of it song's harvest spirit is reaping.
With the rising of the sun the world's day begins,
The day of the market and gossip -- the sowing of sins.
In the daylight of the world the lover is like a fish
Hooked and thrown up on the burning sand to writhe and perish.
He longs for the ocean of night with its islands of stars,
And the white hand of his Beloved that heals the day's scars.
In the silence continues the siege of the Beloved's beauty;
And his soul's sigh steals out and goes on sentry duty.

Sunlight made visible By Akka Mahadevi (12th Century) English version by A. K. Ramanujan
Sunlight made visible
the whole length of sky,
movement of wind,
leaf, flower, all six colours
on tree, bush and creeper:
all this
is the day's worship.
The light of moon, star and fire,
lightnings and all things
that go by the name of light
are the night's worship.
Night and day
in your worship
I forget myself
O lord white as jasmine.

"You'll seldom experience regret for anything that you've done. It is what you haven't done that will torment you. The message, therefore, is clear. Do it! Develop an appreciation for the present moment. Seize every second of your life and savor it. Value your present moments. Using them up in any self-defeating ways means you've lost them forever." - Wayne Dyer, Author and Speaker

It Is Time to Wake Up! By Hafiz, (1320 - 1389)
English version by Thomas Rain Crowe
Hey you, parrot! speaking in riddles,
Sugar wouldn't melt in your mouth!
Clear your head so your heart will be happy,
And then mimic the words of the Beloved!
To everyone who walks by, you have given mixed messages;
For God's sake, tell us something we don't know.
O Winebringer, throw some of Your best wine in our face,
For it is time to wake up!
What chord was it last night that the Minstrel played
That caused the drunk and the pious both to dance?
What drug did You put in their cups
That caused them to lose both their hats and their heads?
Not even to Alexander the Great would Your lovers give the Wine of Life;
He hadn't the power or the gold for that price.
Today, treason is the currency of the world,
But compared with Love, even alchemy has lost its flash.
Come, and listen to our stories of pain;
Even with few words, the truth is still there.
O Lord, don't tell our secrets to those who don't drink;
One cannot give a picture on the wall Your enlightened touch.
To a millionaire, money is the standard of the world;
Hafiz says: O beggars, I have exchanged all my money for these poems!

Love is a lamp of God, I am its moth; By Seyh Galib, (1757 - 1799) English version by Bernard Lewis
Love is a lamp of God, I am its moth;
love is a shackle, my heart is its crazy captive.
Since becoming a sharer in the secret of your glance
my heart became a friend of the friend, a stranger to the stranger.
Making no difference between dry piety and endless carouse --
such is the libertine way of the masters of ecstasy.
The black soil of the reveler's world is full of abundance,
the sun of wisdom rises in the tavern jar.
He drinks the wine mingled with poison of the glance of those eyes;
I could be tipsy from the languor of those blue eyes.
Take care, do not neglect that sleeping dagger,
its tale is always the gossip of death.
Galib, enter the secluded palace of pleasure and see its secret,
the wise way of the daughter of the vine is something else.

Ten thousand flowers in spring, the moon in autumn - By Wu Men (Hui-k'ai), (1183 - 1260)
English version by Stephen Mitchell
Ten thousand flowers in spring, the moon in autumn,
a cool breeze in summer, snow in winter.
If your mind isn't clouded by unnecessary things,
this is the best season of your life.

He who arrives at the state of indifference without experiencing interest in life is incomplete and apt to be tempted by interest at any moment; but he who arrives at the state of indifference by going through interest really attains the blessed state. - Bowl of Saki, February 11, by Hazrat Inayat Khan

Flower in the crannied wall By Alfred Tennyson,
(1809 - 1892)
Flower in the crannied wall,
I pluck you out of the crannies; --
Hold you here, root and all, in my hand,
Little flower -- but if I could understand
What you are, root and all, and all in all,
I should know what God and man is.

In truth, I led my prayer leader in prayer (from The Poem of the Sufi Way)
By Umar Ibn al-Farid, (1181 - 1235)
English version by Th. Emil Homerin
In truth, I led my prayer leader in prayer
with all of humanity behind me;
wherever I turned
was my way,
And my eye saw her before me
in my prayer,
my heart witnessing me
leading all my leaders.
It is no wonder
the prayer leader prayed toward me
since she had settled in my heart
as niche of my prayer niche.
All six directions faced me
with all there was
of piety and pilgrimage
both great and small.
To her I prayed my prayers
at Abraham's Station,
and I witnessed in them
her prayer to me,
Both of us one worshipper
bowing to his reality
in union
in every prostration.
For no one prayed to me but I
nor were my prayers performed
to other than me
in each genuflection.
How long must I be brother to the veil?
I have rent it,
and its clasps were loosened
in the bond of my pledge!

"Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I shall have the belief that I can do it. I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it, even if I may not have it at the beginning." - Mahatma Gandhi, 1869-1948, Indian Nationalist Leader
